About Omoju Miller, Technologist, Educator, and Advisor
Omoju Miller is a technologist, educator, and an advisor who has over a decade of experience in the technology industry. She is currently an interdisciplinary PhD student in computer science and education at the University of California at Berkeley. She is a member of the BEST (Berkeley Experts Systems Technology Lab). Her work deals with the intersection of creativity and cognition. She has a master's degree in electrical and computer engineering (2004) and a bachelor's degree in computer science (2001) both from the University of Memphis.
After attaining her undergraduate degree in computer science, she joined a start-up Thoughtware Technologies Inc, as a software engineer where she worked on a building enterprise workforce development management systems for Fortune 500 companies. The company developed automated learning systems that used artificial intelligence techniques to train company employees. Through this work, Omoju developed a love for artificial intelligence. Her master's research dealt with the semantic web expert systems technology. She has continued to pursue research in the area of learning technologies. Her current research deals with human cognition and reasoning as applied to the understanding of Hip-Hop music, which can then be used as a handle to develop computation thinking.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Omoju is interested in pathways of under-represented minority inclusion in technology. She is a frequent contributor to the National Science Foundation's broadening participation blog, as well as a member of National Center for Women & Information Technology.
In 2011, she founded TEDxEuclidAve, an independent TED event, to spur on social entrepreneurship and innovation. Omoju serves in a volunteer capacity as an advisor to the White House Presidential Innovation Fellows, where she focuses on inclusion and diversity in technology. She is also the strategic adviser to the HotChalk foundation, Campbell, CA.
Omoju is originally from Lagos, Nigeria. She is based in Oakland, CA.
