The capacity to fluctuate and alter oneself in order to accommodate ever-changing circumstances – that’s adaptability.

Unlocking your potential for success at work!

Being able to adjust to the times is a universal ability that carries substantial value, yet I was never taught its significance in college. The workplace environment is ever-changing – economic ups and downs, unexpected competitors entering the market, colleagues leaving or joining your team, and constant changes in priorities. If you are capable of enduring all these alterations while still maintaining top-quality performance – this will without a doubt demonstrate how invaluable an asset you can be as an employee.

Changing to Manage Processes

During my first job, I was frequently met with process changes due to growing pains, employee turnover, and a range of other causes. Despite the turbulent work environment that these changes created for me, it felt like more of an uphill battle as every time I managed to get accustomed to one method, my manager would soon afterward ask us all to switch up our methods again. It can be so irritating having your workflow constantly interrupted by change!

Staying vigilant is essential when your company shifts process frequently. Maintain a log of how management wants tasks to be executed and make sure you’re following suit properly. If, after allowing time for adjustment, the new change seems lacking in efficiency, record an example of this and bring it up during an appropriate meeting with leadership. This way everyone can work together to streamline operations! To make sure your boss takes you seriously, try to come up with low-effort solutions that you can lead. Avoid merely complaining and instead focus on increasing productivity. Your suggestions will be positively received if they are presented in this manner!

After I began my first job after college, one thing quickly became apparent– there is no perfect system. Companies (even the most successful ones!) often struggle to find solutions and have to rely on trial and error. Rather than getting annoyed with a company change, whether it be large or small scale, think of this as an educational opportunity in which your opinion can shine through by suggesting potential answers! When I was responsible for our organization’s client email blasts, I found the new process to be both laborious and full of formatting troubles using the proposed template. Rather than getting discouraged by this issue, I decided to do some research and suggested my boss create customizable company-branded templates as a solution. In spite of the cost to produce these email templates, I was able to prove that the time saved in each blast and the more professional look of my emails easily exceeded this initial charge.

Changing to Manage People

In addition to being flexible with corporate changes, it is essential to tailor your working style depending on the individual. Taking a few moments to understand how people prefer doing things and adjusting accordingly can transform the way you work. For example, some are auditory learners who favor conversations while others may be more visual and rely heavily on Powerpoint presentations. The approach from managers also differs; certain executives give employees autonomy as long as their tasks get completed whereas other leaders value frequent updates about progress reports. Reaching out to your colleagues in either a face-to-face or email conversational manner may yield varying levels of success; some will respond better when you speak with them directly, while others are more apt to reply over the digital exchange.

Utilizing basic resources such as word tables instead of Excel spreadsheets can have a significant positive effect. I had one manager who regularly experienced distress while trying to access attachments on her mobile phone, so I resorted to the small yet productive change of pasting documents into emails rather than attaching them when she was away from work. This transformed our communication and alleviated any frustrations felt towards me regardless of what information I provided in those emails.

If you wish to make yourself into a valued team member, then it is essential that you get to know your colleagues and the way in which they operate. Maintaining an upbeat attitude at work and being able to adjust accordingly (instead of expecting others to cater to your needs) are surefire ways of achieving success. Be clear on what the overall objective is and be willing to collaborate with those around you in order to achieve this goal efficiently together.

Visualize every transition – no matter how large or small – as preparation to master the art of becoming an extraordinary manager. When faced with issues, your strength and capability to surpass any challenge while still delivering a successful presentation will always elevate you above all else.
