When the question “Are women funny?” is asked, it’s time for an eye roll and a mental face-palm. This long outdated debate should have been put to rest years ago, yet unfortunately, Cosmo still persists in asking this ridiculous query. It’s clearly insensitive and offensive – let me repeat that: it IS LUDICROUS!

National Humor Month is quickly approaching! So in celebration, here are some of the most riotous books written by women that you should undoubtedly read. Prepare to be taken aback by how hard you will laugh while reading these works – it’s okay if people around you think your a bit loco since they won’t understand why your laughing so much! But who cares? With these books, even the dullest morning can turn into an enjoyable one.

1. Let’s Just Say It Wasn’t Pretty

by Diane Keaton

I am eagerly counting down the days till one of my most anticipated books of this season arrives! If her debut novel Then Again is anything to go by, Let’s Just Say It Wasn’t Pretty will be an emotional roller coaster full of laughter. This book centers around lessons learned while in a beauty-driven industry – including some mortifying mishaps like when a makeup artist told her she should get her eyes ‘fixed’. Uh oh. I can’t wait to read it!

2. Bossypants

by Tina Fey

Although this book has been around for a while, it still stands as an exceptional archetype among humorous female memoirs. If I could give one more piece of advice – listen to the audiobook read by Tina herself! It is absolutely priceless; in fact, I was laughing so hard that my car had to pull over on the highway. This book is definitely worth checking out and listening to if you haven’t already!

3. Let’s Pretend This Never Happened

by Jenny Lawson

If you are already a fan of The Bloggess and haven’t yet read her memoir, I highly recommend that you do so right away! Don’t just take my word for it though. In Jenny’s own Goodreads review she said: “I wrote this book so I think I’m required to like it. But even if someone else had written it, I would still enjoy it – although then again, maybe sue them for stealing my life story? It’s all very confusing…much like the book itself!” Trust me on this one – just go ahead and give The Bloggess’ memoir a chance!

4. How to Succeed in Business Without Really Crying

by Carol Leifer

Carol Leifer’s collection of daring and humorous essays, recently released to immense acclaim from the comedic upper echelon, offers an inside look at her remarkable career in television. With multiple Emmy nominations for hit shows like Late Night with David Letterman, Saturday Night Live, Modern Family and Seinfeld – widely regarded as the greatest show ever made – Carol was a pathbreaker for women who were struggling to make their mark in what had been a male-dominated industry. If you need further convincing that this book is worth your time and money just take Jerry Seinfeld’s word on it: “If you don’t buy this book right now you’ve got to be a total shmuck.”

5. Where’d You Go, Bernadette: A Novel

by Maria Semple

If you’re looking for a novel with an entertaining spin, Where’d You Go Bernadette? is the perfect pick. Semple’s delightfully crafted mixed-media style and her offbeat characters are what make this story so enjoyable. I could not help but laugh when one of the characters said “This is why you must love life: one day you’re offering up your social security number to the Russian Mafia; two weeks later you’re using the word calve as a verb.” It goes to show that life can be unpredictable yet amusing at times!

6. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)

by Mindy Kaling

Although this book is still waiting on my nightstand to be read, I have only heard rave reviews from people around me. It must mean something special if everyone has such a positive outlook about it! Plus, Mindy Kaling’s words of wisdom speak volumes – we share the same sentiments when she said: “There is no sunrise so beautiful that it is worth waking me up to see it.” This statement alone makes me want to delve into her wit and humor all the more!

7. The Most of Nora Ephron

by Nora Ephron

I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of Nora Ephron’s recent book which is sure to be comically genius and all-encompassing. This collection serves as a fitting tribute to her marvelous career, with essays about flat-chestedness and politics, the screenplay for When Harry Met Sally, Heartburn – her bestselling novel – and an unpublished play titled Lucky Guy. In short, this book will provide readers with an incomparable comedic experience from one of our greatest minds: Nora Ephron!

8. Everything Is Perfect When You’re a Liar

by Kelly Oxford

Kelly Oxford’s Everything Is Perfect When You’re A Liar is one of the year’s earliest and most beloved releases, propelling her to acclaim as a top humor author. To get an idea of what this astounding anthology holds, check out some of Kelly’s tweets like “It sucks that we all have to get old and die, also that tomorrow is Monday.” With its hilarious quips, it’s no surprise why this book has become popular among readers!
