The Independence Project
March 2016 — Present
The Independence Project is a unique and impactful study designed to examine how transitioning veterans interact with the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Veterans Disability Compensation system. Job Coaches for the Independence Project work one-on-one with veterans to determine their vocational calling and help them find satisfying employment. The interactions focus on the value of work and the sense of purpose achieved through social, civic, and workforce engagement. Specific tasks include evaluating job abilities and needs, skill matching, resume building, providing effective job search methods, and facilitating practice interview sessions, as well as being an encourager and motivator.
