“Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate.”—John F. Kennedy
Next Tuesday, April 9, is Equal Pay Day. This day marks how far into the year a woman must work to earn the same amount made by a man in the previous year. President Kennedy made major inroads for women’s wages when he signed the Equal Pay Act in 1963, but here we are, 50 years later, and women are still making only 77 cents to every dollar earned by men.
That is why, instead of just focusing on thinking about negotiating your salary just one day a year, we want you to always #Ask4More. We have come up with this plan of action to help you build the skills and gain the confidence to #Ask4More. As women, we need to come together to realize the importance of negotiating for higher salaries.
#Ask4More is a call to action to change how you are approaching your career. By joining the movement, you will receive:
- A Week-long Email Series: It will teach you the ins and outs of successful salary negotiation (sign up here!).
- Invitations to Local Levo Workshops: By joining the #Ask4More movement, you will also be invited to join in-person workshops with women just like you.
- Valuable connections: Connect with peers and mentors on Levo League’s network. Together we will give and receive support as we navigate through negotiations and carry these relationships with us throughout the rest of our careers.
We put together a fun video illustrating the pay gap in real life situations. Watch it (it’s short and sweet!) and share with your friends.
Remember, you don’t get what you deserve. You get what you ask for!
