Great Music for Your Work Playlist

Viewing on Levo:

Only you can see this list

Music is universal and understood by all. It can change your mood and your day in an instant, which is why I’m a firm believer in listening to music while I work. I believe that on days when I have my headphones in, I’m at my most productive.

Working in an open cube area surrounded by my work friends, it can be hard to concentrate with the background noise and distractions. I love zoning out in my cube with my headphones in, forgetting I’m in the office and just completing my tasks. My music makes me happy and reminds me of the great memories that allow me to be happy while I work, instead of frustrated or even annoyed due to stress, high volume of work, or loud co-workers. Music takes me to my own oasis.

I hope music provides your workday with as much happiness as it does for me. If you don’t listen to music, or don’t know what to listen to or where to begin, I’ve provided you with some go-to tunes that I hope make a great jumping-off point:

Upbeat songs affect your mood in a positive aspect, which can increase your output of work.

As a born and raised Jersey girl, anything by Bruce Springsteen instantly puts me in a dancing mood and gets me tapping my feet—and even caught singing sometimes in my cube. Bruce reminds me of summer days down the shore with my closest friends enjoying our company and the beautiful weather. My favorite songs are “Tenth Avenue Freeze Out” and “Rosalita,” but I love them all.

Songs that make you want to dance will get your blood flowing while you sit at your desk.

Instead of dancing around in your cube, you can dance your work away. “PYT” by Michael Jackson reminds me of my mother who sang this to me growing up and I have grown accustomed to the upbeat song. It makes me thankful for the amazing relationship I have with my mother. I only hope that someday I can be the strong mother she is and continue to sing “PYT” to my own children.

Songs that spark emotion can create a more positive atmosphere at work and remind you a better time in your life and immediately improve your mood.

“Simply the Best,” by Tina Turner ensures me that I have the best friends and strongest support system because my group of girlfriends is simply the best. They are there for me whenever I need them. Whether it is a friend to catch happy hour with, vent to about a coworker, or hold your hand while you lose a loved one; my girls are where it’s at. Or “Cheeseburger in Paradise” by Jimmy Buffett. Growing up as the daughter of a parrot head, there is no question that you must love the laid back singer as he sings of fun times and relaxing by the beach. My father required my sister and I knew every word to his favorite songs. Luckily “Cheeseburger in Paradise” stuck with my sister and me as the song is silly and about eating one of our favorite foods. Improving your emotion and mood in the office is important because you spend a significant amount of time in your cube and you need to be comfortable and happy. If you are miserable at your desk, that will reflect in your work.

Some songs increase confidence based on the story or lyrics within the song. Increasing your personal confidence in the office is always a plus.

“I Knew You Were Trouble” by Taylor Swift makes me feel powerful and strong as I overcame my first heartache. I was in a relationship that was going nowhere, everyone told me it was not a good idea and I soon learned that the boy I loved was really on trouble. Taylor Swift, an artist, I used to loathe, came to my side as a friend when I needed her most. When I hear this song I am reminded that I am a strong, independent, young woman that does not need a man who holds me back more that I need one to hold my hand as I move forward.

Certain music can be calming to an individual and relieve a lot of stress or anxiety.

This is important to utilize in work because there can be many times in ones work day that is full of stress and anxiety. Any song Frank Sinatra will brighten my day as it reminds me of my family and the amazing bond we have. Sinatra is my grandfather’s favorite artist and he was always singing his lyrics; there was no choice but to not fall in love with Sinatra and his beautiful lyrics if you are a member of my family.

If you can make your work day more enjoyable, why wouldn’t you? These thoughts and memories makes us happy, and happy workers are stronger and more productive workers. Music definitely allows me to execute my best work.

With today’s technology we have great resources at our fingertips to create amazing playlists to get through our very busy work days. I suggest keeping your favorite songs on your smartphone, or use free resources like Pandora or iHeartRadio to listen to music of your favorite genre.
