4 Things Every College Student Should Do Before Summer Vacation

It’s that time of year again. Classes are wrapping up and finals are upon us. With end-of-the-year assignments becoming the priority, it’s important not to forget about what’s to come.

Whether you are returning to school in the fall or this is your last semester, it’s important to remember to do the following things before you head out for summer vacation:

Ask for letters of recommendation. Did you have a great experience with a professor this semester? Don’t let it go to waste. Before you say goodbye, ask your professor to write a letter of recommendation on your behalf. It doesn’t have to be for a specific role, but you never know when it might help you in the future. Ask before you leave for summer vacation, when you’re still fresh in your professor’s mind.

Update your portfolio. You probably took some classes this semester that gave you material to add to your professional portfolio. These can be articles, writing pieces, art projects, newsletters, or anything else related to your career goals. Determine the areas you could have improved and fix the mistakes. Ask your professor to give it another look. When you think your work is as close to perfect as possible, add it to your portfolio.

Update your resume and cover letter. Again, it’s all about keeping things fresh in your mind. Add your experiences from the semester to your resume before you start summer vacation. Write a few paragraphs about your accomplishments so you can use them in future cover letters.

Solidify your current connections. Once your classes end, your classmates will either graduate, head home for summer vacation, or move away for summer internships. You’ll probably lose contact with these people in the process, as well as professors and mentors you might have at school. Connect with these people online via email or social networks before you leave school.

What else should you do before you leave for summer vacation?
