The Power of a Cofounder
One would think Jessica Alba has all the confidence in the world. And yet, when Alba was trying to start the Honest Company, which is now valued at almost $1 billion, a lot of investors were skeptical. It definitely got her down…at first. At Inc.‘s GrowCo conference in Nashville last week, she told the audience, ”People were like, ‘It’s way too big of an idea and I don’t know how you’re going to tackle it.’ Not one person said, ‘Sure, that’s possible.’” What helped was bringing in cofounder and CEO Brian Lee, who understood how committed and passionate she was about the cause. “He legitimized it,” she said. “A lot of people can be a celebrity. You don’t really have to have any talent to do that. You can, I don’t know, let cameras follow your life.” (Related: Tory Burch shares her entrepreneurship secrets.)
Yes We Cannes
Lots of big news happening in the cinematic world. This May, Emmanuelle Bercot will become the first female filmmaker to open the Cannes International Film Festival with her film La Tete Haute. The festival is also launching the ‘Women in Motion’ program to celebrate women in film and their contributions to the industry. And to make matters even happier, filmmaker and actress Isabella Rossellini has been named president of this year’s Un Certain Regard Jury, a division of the Official Competition. This awesome representation of women is a drastic change from even just three years ago, when the legendary festival didn’t nominate any women in the best director category.
