Resume 102: How to Write Action Statements

Are you struggling with your resume? Is it hard to remember what you have accomplished? Here are five basic types of accomplishment statements to get you started:

1. You increased revenue.


Designed a retailer display that increased product placements and resulted in 8 percent annual sales growth.

Worked with our wholesale distributors to identify under performing retailers to include in a new marketing program. Efforts resulted in increased product placements and 8 percent annual sales growth.

2. You decreased expenses.


Wrote an RFP for a new telecom service provider that resulted in improved user features and a 4 percent decrease in annual expense.

Analyzed responses to an RFP for a new telecom provider. Identified three vendors for on-site interviews. Change resulted in a 4 percent decrease in annual expense.

3. You made something happen faster.


Led a collaborative review and restructuring of delivery routes that enabled drivers to reach major customers 30 minutes earlier each day.

Selected to participate on a task force that reviewed and restructured delivery routes. Changes enabled drivers to reach major customers 30 minutes earlier each day.

4. You made something better.


Established a relationship manager, single-point-of-contact program for all internal customers. Program resulted in consistent service, higher levels of service, and improved relationships with other departments.

Assigned to work with Purchasing as their single point of contact with Accounting. Automated preparation of three “shadow system” reports that had previously required 10 hours of staff time per week.

5. You were promoted.


Promoted from Manager to Director.


Ask yourself, “What role did I play, either as the lead or as a team member, in making the company more money or in making operations cheaper, faster, or better?” You’ll almost invariably come up with some good answers and some great resume fodder!
