Welcome to Local Levo's Spotlight Series, where we feature recaps of Local Levo events, interviews with our speakers and facilitators and activities for you to do in each city. Learn more about Local Levo here.
Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Ebony Ruffin's interest in finance and accounting began in childhood where she was taught the value of earning income, saving and investing. Her passion led her to pursue a BSBA in Finance from Auburn University and an MBA from Mercer University.
With over 12 years of experience in finance and accounting, she led an accounting team of 5 members as Director of Finance for a law firm in Reston, Virginia. She later moved into the life insurance industry where she earned her license and an appointment with a community-driven life insurance company.
Ebony joined Levo as a way to connect with other like-minded women in an environment conducive to authenticity, community, career growth and friendship. One day she received an email about an open leadership opportunity on the local level with Levo DC. She knew applying for a leadership role with the one organization that was instrumental to her growth in DC was an opportunity to give back to the community. She has been a Local Leader for Levo since April 2016.
How has the Local Leader role helped your personal or professional brand?
Local Levo bridged the gap between my dreams and desires to be hands-on in the DC community to the "action" of being a leader in the DC community. Women move to DC for career opportunities and sometimes the road to community, career, and sisterhood can be blurry without the right foundation and resources.
I always wanted to be a resource to women in the DC community providing career opportunities, a quality platform to network, tools to manage finances, health and be a safe environment to discuss obstacles women face as they climb the corporate ladder or transition into entrepreneurship.
Through being in "action" on this mission, opportunities were presented to share my personal brand and crusade of life insurance education and awareness.

Where's your favorite place to find inspiration in DC?
DC is a community that thrives on politics, food, culture, and art. I maintain a "DC List" in my phone of the many places I enjoy that provide a boost of inspiration. Some of my most inspirational spaces in DC and surrounding area includes A Baked Joint, Salamander Resort and Spa and Philz Coffee.
