One of the easiest ways to improve your chances of receiving an interview is by securing a referral or introduction from someone you know. If you ask a close colleague or friend, they will most likely be happy to help out. However, if it’s someone you haven’t spoken to in a while, it can be a little more daunting. Here is our foolproof method for requesting an intro, as well as a bonus email sample.
The Formula
Casual pleasantries: Check LinkedIn to see where they work, live, etc. If they recently started a new job, ask them how it’s going. And if there’s currently a major world event happening, like say…a blizzard – tell them you hope they stay warm!
The meat: Be transparent about your motives for reaching out. You either want a shot at the company through someone they know, or you’re seeking an informational interview. It doesn’t matter what you ask for; what matters is that you make it clear they can say no if they’d like. It’s possible They may have lost touch with the person you want to be introduced to, or maybe there was some bad blood when they left a previous job–you never know. Just remember: you’re asking for a favor here.
Call to action: Be clear about what you need from them. Do you want copies of the emails they send? Just a good word? A phone call? A recommendation for a specific role?
