Beauty isn’t just about a perfect smile or great hair. It is a quality that radiates not from our matte-red lipstick or patent heels, but rather from the joy and confidence that we share with those around us. Pretty comes in all shapes, colors, and variations, and it is a reflection of the composition of our soul, not our vanity table or wardrobe.
When we partnered with Bobbi Brown and Refinery29 for our Elevate Your Look event, we wanted to bring this exact ethos to our Local Levo communities. Elevate Your Look concluded in San Francisco last week, and we were able to help show the women in attendance how beautiful they already were. How did we do that? By arming them with the advice from beauty and fashion authorities to make them more confident in their appearance. And confidence is the the foundation to an elevated look.
Bobbi Brown’s “Pretty Powerful” campaign, which gives women and girls the opportunity to be their best, was front and center in San Francisco last week as six makeup artists provided instant makeup touchup to all the guests, showing them how to highlight their already glowing features. Marc Reagan, Bobbi Brown Manager of Artistry, was on hand to share his best tips for doing just that. “Confidence is everything, but a little makeup doesn’t hurt,” Reagan told us, “Makeup is a way for women to look like themselves only prettier and more confident.” Here is his advice for using makeup to highlight your natural features:
Think of your professional makeup as a “good suit” that you can dress up or down!
Start with a foundation of healthy skin and well-defined eyebrows and eyelashes. From there, you can dress up your look with blush, eye shadow, and lip products as necessary for the office or cocktails.
It all begins with healthy skin
Be sure to hydrate your skin by moisturizing daily and drinking water throughout the day. And never, ever leave home without sunscreen!
Pesky dark circles and puffiness can develop under your eyes from hard work and stress. Use corrector and concealer to keep this area bright, which will in turn brighten your entire face.
Even Out Skin Tone
You don’t want your neck and your face to be two different shades. Your makeup should serve as a tool to enhance your natural features, so start with foundation to create an even skin tone.
Keep Makeup Fresh
Be prepared for any situation and keep your look fresh by keeping blotting papers or pressed powder, corrector or concealer, blush, lipstick and lipgloss with you to touch up throughout the day as necessary.
Define your eyes with looks that are clean and classic
Use mascara to thicken and add volume to your eyelashes, and be sure to line the top of your eyes, too.
Angela Tafoya, Refinery29’s San Francisco Editor, shared five ways to do business casual without squeezing the fun out of life.
Try to incorporate one print into each outfit
Whether it’s a skirt suit with a graphic polka dot blouse, a full skirt in a Bauhaus stripe, or a leopard print on your pump, it’s an easy way to incorporate life into your outfits without veering away from traditional shape.
Stock up on pencil skirts
It’s an infinitely versatile piece for a real woman’s life (think work, drinks, weekend), and you can go pretty nuts with the colors, prints, and textures without it feeling inappropriate.
Modern tailoring is everything
Take your old suits in to a tailor and get things taken in or cropped for the perfect fit.
Make sure you keep a well-stocked “closet” at work.
A lovely, cashmere cardigan, “party shoes,” emergency flats, a spare blazer, and hot lipstick will make it easy to get dressed up or dressed down in a flash (and deal with unpredictable office air conditioning).
Add some delicate pieces to your jewelry box
Delicate jewelry is a huge trend this season, and it allows you to get a little crazy while also being discrete.
