Over the last 5 years Jessica Alba has gone from successful actress to powerhouse businesswoman as the Co-founder of The Honest Company. Though the business was underestimated at first as it just seemed like another actress launching something, Alba quickly proved everyone wrong. Honest went from selling health and eco-friendly diapers and baby wipes has turned into a household name and a $1.7 billion valuation.
And as a mother of now three children who continue to act, it seems that this woman is absolutely unstoppable. She reminded us of that fact this week when she simply shared a picture of herself on Instagram breastfeeding her young son Hayes Alba Warren at her office. In the caption she wrote, "Went into my @honest office today for a board meeting, although I’m still technically on mat leave," Alba wrote. "Not gonna lie, it’s impossible for me to completely unplug from work ...and it felt nice being back -even though it was just a half day. Baby boy came to visit/eat at lunch. Felt very productive today."
Though many women breastfeed at work it is still considered taboo in some industries (and in society in general.) And even though most states have laws to protect mothers who breastfeed in public many people are still against it. Pumping at work, as we have explored at Levo, is also it's own beast with resources being limited for women and offices being generally unsupportive even though Federal Law requires employers to give nursing mothers time to pump and a private space.
That is why it is so great to see a woman with such a high profile sharing her experience with her 12.3 million followers. Now, yes, Alba is in a fortunate position as the head of her company but hopefully employers take note that by allowing the workplace to be supportive and helpful to new moms, productivity and retention will increase.
