We’ve all heard the saying “fake it ‘til you make it.” Even if you have no idea what you’re doing, act like you do until you do. Easier said than done though, right?
Levo spoke with Marissa Kraxberger, VP of Creative at Oscar de la Renta during yesterday’s Office Hours, who proved that not only can you fake it ‘til you make it, but you’re probably not faking it as much as you think.
Go After It
Kraxberger never waited for the ball to be in her court. Before Oscar, Kraxberger has worked at Diane Von Furstenberg, Kate Spade, and a digital ad agency, among other places. Each time Kraxberger heard about a new opportunity, she didn’t wait for it to land in her lap; she went after it full force. You need to strive to do more, she said. If you really want to keep moving up, go after the next big thing. Don’t hold yourself back.
Always Say Yes
Kraxberger said it’s important to remember that you won’t always know how to do everything right away, but if you always say, “Yes, I can do it,” you can figure it out along the way. This was a tactic she applied when starting off in each newer, higher position, and it helped her gain momentum and establish expertise as a creative and as an employee of the company. So always say yes, said Kraxberger. Put aside your fears and move forward.
No matter your what your industry or level in your career, bringing new ideas to the table is a great way to show that you know what you’re doing. Kraxberger says Pinterest is a great tool for inspiration as a creative person—it’s not just looking at an image; it’s also looking at and reading the story someone had put behind an image. It’s a great way to let your imagination run wild.
Gather Your Cheerleaders
At work, at home, and everywhere else, people believed in Kraxberger to do things she never imagined she could do. We’re always our own worst enemies, but when you have people on your team reminding you that you can do this, that you are good enough, smart enough, talented enough, who are you to tell them otherwise? ;)
When in Doubt…
Self doubt is the hardest thing about being a career person, especially a creative. Try not to focus on the negative, but if you’re in a situation of fearing making the wrong decision, it’s mostly about doubt, and it can be dangerous. You can do anything you set your mind to do. You may not be the best, but if you care and remember to focus on that and trying your hardest and establishing relationships and being positive, you’ll excel in your career.
You’re Not a Phony
Are you worried that people think you’re a phony? Remember that you’re better than you think, and ask your support system for help to push past those moments. You’re better than you ever give yourself credit for.
