8 Activities That Are Fun to Do Alone (and Won’t Make You Feel Lonelier)

“You know, there are some things that are actually harder to do with two people. Like, monologues.” –Liz Lemon

Bad news, ladies. If you think shopping alone is one of your favorite activities because it provides retail therapy, you might want to consider getting a new hobby. According to new research from the Journal of Consumer Research discussed this week in The Atlantic, shopping propagates a “loneliness loop.” To sum it up, shopping can fill a void, but at the same time, it can make you even lonelier, or it can make you want to shop even more. The cycle just goes on and on. There is a difference between being alone and being lonely, and it is up to you to find what makes you happy. We came up with a few suggestions for good alone time activities. Keep reading to see them all.

1) Catch up on a TV series you have never seen before

“Orange is the New Black” is the new black.Yes, it’s better to talk about the new Netflix series with people, but you have to actually watch the show first. I find that watching shows with friends is hard and I end up talking the whole time. (I may or may not have been shushed during an episode of “Gossip Girl”). If I really want to watch and absorb a series, I need to do it solo.

2) Try a DIY project

Paint a bookshelf, bedazzle a frame, or make a birdhouse. Yes, you can do this with other people but how cool will it be to say you did it all by yourself? Plus, if you don’t do it well or finish it, it is less embarrassing.

3) Clean

Cleaning is an activity I believe is best done alone. Unless your friends are like the overly-friendly forest animals in “Snow White”, it should just be you and Mr. Clean.

4) Write

As Virginia Woolf once wrote, “A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” I am not sure about the money, but being alone in a room can do wonders if you want to write. Write a story, write about your day, write about work, or write about what you want to do with your career.

5) Take selfies

Make a selfie montage! Have a little fashion show and share it with the world. Put forth your best self!

6) Take a class

Some classes are great to take with friends, but sometimes it is just great to have an experience that just belongs to you. Maybe a cool new exercise class or a pottery making class? You never know what you may learn about yourself.

7) Go to a movie

Going to a movie by yourself is not sad or pathetic. I honestly like going to movies by myself. Sometimes you need to escape and you need to do it on your schedule and coordinating with a friend is too hard. Plus, when you’re by yourself, you don’t have to share your popcorn!

8) Read a book

Skip the movie and finally read that book you have been dying to read. Read it for yourself, or read it for book club and steal the show with your witty comments and observations! Check out our summer reading list!
