6 Ways to Make Your Workspace Beautiful

In today’s fast-paced world, there’s a life hack for every aspect of our working lives. We love an easy fix, but honestly (as you know) it’s better planning that makes for the best productivity. We asked our friends at Homepolish–the startup that’s changing the interior design game one affordable, beautiful space at a time–to give us their suggestions for a practical and attractive workspace. Check out their practical design ideas for improving your work desk.

1. Designate a legitimate work zone.

Are you still working from your sofa? Maybe even from your bed? Stop! Give yourself a designated workspace. When you sit down at this new desk and turn on your computer/open your notebook/put paper in your typewriter (hey, whatever works) you’re officially in work mode. Especially in small homes, we find that creating appointed areas for different “rooms” makes the space feel more focused. Even if your office is in your living room, you can create an area that’s strictly for working and ease your transition from half-asleep mode to sitting-at-your-desk productive mode.

2. Put your desk in front of a window.

Another proven tip for increasing productivity is natural sunlight. If you can, put your work zone in front of a window and bask in sunshine while furiously plugging away at whatever you do that brings home the bacon. Take a break and look out of the window every now and then. This tip also plays in well with the next one…

3. Plants!

Get some oxygen into your workspace with the easy-to-care-for versions of our little green friends. Plants add depth, color, and actual health benefits to a space. They’re beautiful and useful! Succulents are pretty hard to kill as long as you took our last piece of advice and keep them near a window. We compiled a few more green thumb tips on the Homepolish Magazine.

4. Get organized.

Have you ever calculated how much time you spend looking for something around your desk? If you have, then you’re probably already aware of how wasteful this process is. If you haven’t, believe us when we say you’ll be better off spending that time doing something productive (like actually writing that email that you drafted on a post-it note buried under forty other things). Labeled file boxes, filing cabinets, even color-coordinated pen holders make a big difference. If you have a little desk, there are lots of attractive and inexpensive wall hanging options. Put what you use regularly front and center! The rest can go to the wings.

5. Consider color.

If you’re someone like our editor that can’t write anything while listening to songs with lyrics (she’s weird), then you probably want a calming neutral palette for your workspace. If you find yourself getting tired easily, brighten up your workspace with pops of colorful accessories or even an accent wall. Shades of blue evoke a sense of security; blue and orange together are complimentary and encourage productivity; pastels are bright without being overbearing to give just a little punch to a space.

6. Let there be light!

Working in the dark is not so conducive to productivity (no surprises there), but not all of us are blessed with excellent overhead lighting. Turn off the fluorescents (if you can) and buy an inexpensive, but cute desk lamp. Ikea and Urban Outfitters have great options. Turn down your computer’s brightness and bask in the glow of that 60 watt incandescent light bulb (or 5 watts LED if you’re saving energy!).

Now that you have all the tips, it’s time to implement. The task is only as daunting as you make it, but if you find yourself struggling, Homepolish has your back. Sign up for a one-hour in-home consultation with one of our designers ($50 to $80) and get a second, professional opinion on how to make the most of your work space (at home or in the office!).

And after all that, sitting down and working is key ;) Not just cheek, but in all seriousness, consistently being productive in a designated space is like practicing for a game (think muscle memory) and I find it helps me attribute positive thoughts to sitting at that table. :)
