The goal of the project was to develop a fast prediction model to accurately predict sidelobe levels in dual-offset reflector antennas. This was attempted by investigating near field effects left out by other fast approximations and combining this data with a database of simulation results. The project was specifically focused on the planned MeerKat and SKA telescope to be built in South Africa. After this project I feel I am now capable of independent learning.

I investigated the practical possibilities and advance applications of cheap printable antennas as part of an exchange program. Complex structures were broken down into easily printable 2D designs. These could then be printed on cheap flexible substrate and easily be folded into the more complex 3D designs. The possibilities and uses for time varying antennas, taking advantage of the flexible antenna substrate, were also considered.

Final Year Project

The project goals was to research different dipole antenna configurations and choose the most appropriate design to be optimized to very specific design parameters. A very high bandwidth, 2.4 GHz folded dipole, antenna was designed, simulated, optimised and eventually fabricated and measured. A very high bandwidth (54%) was achieved and measured.
