THE BEST WAY TO PREDICT THE FUTURE IS TO CREATE IT! I moved to Sault Ste. Marie in June 2007. Local work experience includes NCO, Sutherland Global Services, Service Master and Red Cross and Cruz Cab. I started my own business as "Dental Assistant On the Way", in hopes that the temp service would eventually lead to employment opportunities.

LIFE

Family, Wife and Mom

Between the odd employment opportunities I was able to have, I became a wife , had a child 3 months premature (and who is now 7 and in grade 2) kept a steady job search with very few interviews and helped my husband start his own business. I helped anyway I could on the job as his carpenters assistant on his job sites. While most of the scope of work was beyond my ability, I became use to using power tools, drywall taping, using a measuring tape, priming and painting, and cleaning up. I love them dearly and they have been my priority since they happened along! I am eager however to start back into my career and work!

Intra Oral Level II Dental Assistant

It was not burn out after 20 years supporting people but a need to see if I could be great at something different and new. A fabulous idea in theory, but my personal health created some job performance issues. Some things are learned the hard way. It was a detour that was necessary to get back to what I'm meant to do.

Clearing up a personal medical issue completely, that affected every facet of my life changed my life! Iron in your blood makes a very very big difference in energy, physical strength and your immune system. Too much info? It explains how personal health affected my job performance and work place injuries. I think women should talk about it!

Fanshawe College

Development Service Worker

I was able to complete my first year of Development Service Worker then got a full time job. I later regretted not completing that course however did get a ton of experience in group homes for 3 and a 1/2 years. Working a 40 hour float position in 5 different group homes did not make me ideal for dispensing medication and was fired. In facing adversity. I decided University was the route to go.

Lakehead University

Honors Bachelor, Outdoor Recreation Parks and Tourism

At Lakehead I discovered how much I loved people and found myself again working for an agency, and advocating for people around me. My REAL area of study, became how University programs like the one I was in didn't do an exceptional job at preparing graduates to work with people with different needs. My thesis showed that graduates would have opportunities in their employment to expand their skills with special populations in the future running inclusive programs; and that our program of Outdoor Recreation at Lakehead could improve its program goals to make inclusion not just part of the naritive but an actual real skill for graduates.

Deaf/Blind Intervenor

Working with people that were deaf and blind. Support was on a 'do with, not for' premise. I was able to learn sign language and how those signs were often individualized to each client. I found myself using concise communication, and improved my ability to give and recieve information that was not biased. I was chosen as one of 4 staff to go to Cuba to support clients on vacation. I also supported individuals in menu planning, grocery shopping, out in the community and daily tasks. I also went out of my way to increase staff team spirit and was appreciated by my peers and management.

Support Worker

I wanted a challenge, an Open Custody grouphome supporting youth in conflict with the law. They could be difficult to support, a bit of an angry bunch. I had training in Motivational Interviewing and Non Violent Crisis Intervention and Prevention. I had to use my skills in a very different way than I had before. I also had training in Prevention & Management of Aggressive Behavior I had to be on my toes, alert and aware my entire shift. It was an extremely tight ship, so everybody was safe and accounted for. 'Stop and think' was a skill you had to teach. I also learned of the cracks in the system and how a lack of Children's Mental Health Programs led to kids having trouble with the law. I worked different programs within the agency.

Community Support Worker

I supported a client able to navigate his paper route twice a week, all forms of city transit in all seasons, and was introduced to other folks in their homes who were supported by the same agency. We also started a recycling program and did paper shreading for the agency. I was able to go on vacation with another client and his roomates. My duties also included personal care and support while in the community.
