Mary Kaufman counsels and litigates for clients in the entertainment, fashion, and financial industries. She acts as an outsourced general counsel, mostly for startups, handling a wide range of strategic and commercial legal matters. Her work for emerging and growing businesses and individuals includes negotiating and drafting intellectual property licensing agreements, commercial leases, and executive employment agreements.

Ms. Kaufman’s litigation experience includes the successful representation of clients in entertainment arbitrations, employment proceedings, real estate and bankruptcy litigation matters, and civil appeals. She also represents clients in proceedings before the Securities and Exchange Commission. Most notably, Ms. Kaufman successfully opposed a writ of certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court in a case involving the intersection of First Amendment rights and municipal parade ordinances.

Ms. Kaufman attended Loyola Law School, where she was on the Dean’s List and received First Honors in Appellate Advocacy, Film Finance, and Television Production and Programming. She also served as an editor on Loyola’s Entertainment Law Review, and worked as a research assistant to Professor Laurie Levenson, with whom Ms. Kaufman co-authored an article that was published in Michigan Law Review’s First Impressions. During law school, Ms. Kaufman externed for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, where she prosecuted minor federal offenses before federal magistrate judges. She also interned for the legal department of Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), drafting service agreements and analyzing trademark issues.
