Marketing/Public Relations Intern

KMFA 89.5 is a nonprofit, listener-supported classical music radio station serving Central Texas. As the marketing/public relations intern, I worked on promotional, advertising, social media and branding projects for the station. I helped grow the social media presence on Facebook and Twitter, recommended tactics for future strategy and gave presentations explaining social media and my recommendations to KMFA staff and the KMFA Board of Trustees. As for writing, I composed a variety of material for KMFA including press releases, media advisories, programming blurbs for the website, e-mail material, interview questions for the blog and recommended future blog post ideas. Research, learning different aspects of nonprofits, brainstorming and writing advertising copy and placement and event planning were also part of my internship.

Press hit: The press release I wrote for KMFA's media sponsorship of National Public Radio's "From the Top" program coming to the Texas State International Piano Festival at Texas State University in early June resulted in a front page Movies & Life (Arts) section article of the Austin American-Statesman. The article was written by Luke Quinton and included interviews with the host of "From the Top" Christopher O'Riley and two local pianists part of the live radio recording.

Unique project: I pitched local television stations to do a feature on KMFA's "Kids Recording Kids" summer camp at the end of June. We were featured on YNN Austin for live segments throughout the morning show news hours of 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. An editorial piece about the camp ran later in the day every 30 minutes for 24 hours.

Unique opportunity: I was and am a member of the KMFA Community Advisory board. This board serves the purpose of meeting a few times a year at the station to communicate to staff members how the station is doing in terms of serving the community and provides recommendations on how to improve in this area.

I was also responsible for updating and rewriting sections of the Employee Communications Handbook.

A big part of my internship that was unique to my time at NI was helping the internal news transition from one intranet platform to another. Part of this was my being responsible for leading a campaign to have employees submit ideas for a new name for the internal newsletter. The winning name of the newsletter was chosen by the CEO of NI.
