About Drop the Ball

Nationally-recognized expert on women’s leadership and Millennial talent retention, and adviser to Fortune 500 companies, Tiffany Dufu figured out early on what it takes for a woman to get to the top at work: letting go at home. Once the queen of doing it all, Dufu no longer opens her family’s mail, she does not fill out her children’s school forms, she doesn’t schedule play dates or pick up the dry cleaning—her husband does, and he has a demanding career of his own. In Drop the Ball, Dufu recounts her journey toward the realization that the only way she’d ever have the energy and resources necessary to thrive in her career would be if she were to relinquish her to-do list at home.

Even though women are half the workforce, they still represent only eighteen per cent of the highest level leaders. The reasons are obvious: just as women reach middle management they are also starting families. Mounting responsibilities at work and home leave them with no bandwidth to do what will most lead to their success. Offering new perspective on why the women’s leadership movement has stalled, and packed with actionable advice, Tiffany Dufu’s Drop the Ball shows how one woman learned that in order to have it all, she had to stop doing it all. Dufu urges women to embrace imperfection, to expect less of themselves and more from others—only then can they focus on what they truly care about and give themselves the space they need to flourish.
