Microbusiness Specialist

This short-term position was created to promote economic development in Downtown Akron and surrounding neighborhoods. Funded by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Microbusiness Specialist position includes the set-up, management, and promotion of a new entrepreneurial co-working space, maker-space, and training facility within the Downtown Akron Library.

Our new Maker Space and Digital Media Center offer branding and prototyping equipment including a laser engraver, vinyl printer, 3-d printer, green screen and recording studio.

Use of the Microbusiness Center, Maker Space and Digital Media Center are free and open during regular library hours. A small materials fee may be charged for the vinyl printer and 3-D printer.

Most of our classes can be found through Eventbrite.

Helping entrepreneurs make connections with investors, mentors, and talent to help take their idea to the next step. Sundown Rundown has chapters throughout Ohio to give entrepreneurs a chance to pitch their ideas and get the feedback they need.

The next event will take place at Akron's award-winning Blu Jazz club on February 15th. Doors open at 5pm. Attendance is free, but you are responsible for your own food and beverage. Go to www.sundownrundown.org to register to attend or pitch.

I-Corp Sites

Entrepreneurial Lead/Mentor

The goal of the program is to help commercialize UA technologies and ideas. As part of the program, each team is required to attend training and meet with a business mentor and academic advisor. The specific outcome of the UA I-Corps Sites program is to come to a team decision on whether to pursue commercialization through one of the following:

NSF I-Corps Teams program (an intensive 6-week NSF training with $50,000 grant)
Ohio Third Frontier Technology Validation grant (a $50,000 grant with required matching funding)
UA’s Innovation Practice Center (prototyping and commercialization assistance through UA)
