Travel Photography: The Business and Career

I think it's really important for me to talk about the business side of travel photography. Mostly for the reason that I really didn't have anyone around to help me with the money-making side of the industry when I started out. Thus, I think it's important for me to be a mentor for the travel photography business as much as I can. One of the problems with the industry of travel photography is how unwilling a lot of pro photographers are to help. It makes it hard on people, and to be honest I think it's a bit selfish.

Color Theory In Photography

Color theory is one of the most important aspects of art. Photography is no different. If you're interested in making fantastic images that stand out its a technique you'll need to get a handle on. The relationship between photographers and color theory is particularly interesting in that the approach to color has changed entirely over the history of making photographs.

I DID NOT EXPECT THIS | Wildlife Photography behind the scenes - photographing from my photo blind

Focusing Techniques for Photography

Modern DSLR cameras have a number of tools to assist with auto focus functions. One of the problems is these modes can be confusing and unintuitive if you haven't explored the correct ways to use them.

You'll need to consult your camera manual to see how these techniques apply to your specific make and model but in this episode I'm going to cover the two basic techniques of spot focusing and continuous (servo) focusing, when you would use these modes and the techniques around getting them to work for you.

Minimalist COLOR in your photographs

Lets talk again about photographing with intent. In this video I want to talk about what happens in front of your lens and how you can get really effective results by limiting your color palette. Steve McCurry's Afghan girl is an incredible example of this. Its not only a famous photograph but it has become iconic over the years. Everything in this composition supports the eyes including color.

McCurry took this image on with a Nikon FM2, 105mm f/2.5 lens and used Kodachrome 64. While many contest that this is a definitive Kodachrome image, I actually argue that its the selection of colors that was important and keeping them reduced to essentially 3 - red, green and the skin-tone.

Color Theory In Photography

Today in the digital age this is the complete opposite. Cameras natively shoot color images which are transferred to the computer in an RGB color space. Monochrome images today are made by manipulating a natively color image. This is completely opposite of where photography started. Color theory has become something that's thought about less since the images just come out in color.
