Marine Science Instructor

I was the instructor for the Oceanography course (GE level, accredited through the State College of Florida) aboard the 112ft sailing yacht Argo. The course covered the basics of biological, chemical, physical, and geological oceanography as well as marine management and policy. Special emphasis was given to relate the subject matter to the locales we visited.

Additionally, I performed tasks as a deckhand, assisting with sailing the vessel around the South Pacific and Indian Oceans and retrofitting the vessel in a shipyard in Bangkok.

Career

University of Southern California

PhD Graduate Research Assistant, Teaching Assistant

I worked on several projects while at USC, primarily in the realm of sedimentary biogeochemistry. My dissertation focused on the early diagenesis of Carbon, Nitrogen and Silica from marine sediments in the North Eastern Subtropical Pacific and in the Western Tropical Atlantic. My two main research projects involved studying the process of biological nitrate transport in the California Borderland and Mexican Margin, and studying the impact of the Amazon River on the Ocean.

My teaching duties involved directing multiple sections of 20-25 student labs associated with geology or oceanography courses.

In addition to my research and teaching duties, I founded the USC Young Researchers Program to enable high school students from inner-city Los Angeles to get first-hand experience doing research under the mentorship of a graduate student. I also was the chairperson of the organization committee for the 2011 Southern California Geobiology Symposium.
