Project Manager-Astaxanthin Senior Design

Our team of 5 obtained a $500 SEED grant to fuel our investigation and design of the commercial production of astaxanthin using a microalgae. The team has designed a reliable, contamination free system for growing algae to produce a high density culture as well as improved quantification methods used in previous years. Our current focus is to observe the algae in a lab scale CSTR and use the results to improve on the SuperPro model used by the previous team.

Engineer-mESC Differentiation Undergraduate Research

The team is investigating several methods for differentiating mESCs into cardiomyocytes. To begin the project, the team designed a protocol for differentiation. This protocol outlines details about maintaining the iMEF cells as well as mitC treatment, embryoid body formation methods, and techniques for directing differentiation. The team has also built and maintained a bank of iMEFs. Next steps include exploring embryoid body formation and differentiation through experimentation.
