Missouri State University

Graduate Teaching Assistant

I independently teach one section of public speaking (COM 115) per semester. Teaching requires preparing and delivering lectures, designing and grading assignments, and working with students so they can maximize their own potential.

The other half of my assistantship is working with the Missouri State University debate team. While at Missouri State, the debate team qualified three teams to the prestigious National Debate Tournament (NDT) and competed in many elimination rounds. The Missouri State debate team travels to as many as 15 tournaments a year. In addition to traveling with the squad and assisting with travel logistics as needed, the main components of my job were research and argument development. Research focused on democracy assistance in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as domestic policy on energy production of resources such as wind, natural gas, coal, and oil. Argument development included strategy sessions, analyzing research, and evaluating practice speeches and debates.

The Blake School

Assistant Debate Coach

I taught high school students how to debate and guided them in strategy development. Meeting twice a week, I would lecture students on various topics, help them research, and listen to practice speeches and debates. I also supervised and coached students at tournaments, including planning and coordinating out of state trips. While a coach at the Blake School, debaters won the Minnesota state tournament in both varsity and novice policy debate.

When needed, I also had the opportunity to substitute teach Blake students in beginning argumentation and advanced debate courses.
