Kayla Sharpe

Digital Media Editor

The Flat Hat

Washington D.C. Metro Area

I am a Senior at the College of William & Mary majoring in Film & Media Studies with a minor in American Studies and aspirations to pursue a career in Media and Communications. I am an innovative digital journalist interested in developing unique methods of collaboration and communication within digital spaces.

The Flat Hat

Digital Media Editor

Despite the late nights, no pay, and dingy basement office, I am driven by my work with William & Mary's student newspaper, The Flat Hat. From an Online Intern to Online Editor, and now Digital Media Editor, I've had the opportunity to shape the digital objectives of the paper by spearheading high-quality video content, engaging podcasts, and enhanced social media engagement.

"The First Amendment guaranteed a free press. We in the media must make sure it is a fair one" - Allen H. Neuharth

William & Mary Global Film Festival

Public Relations Director

While I love new media, nothing quite beats film's ability to bring people together. Four years of managing PR for William & Mary's annual Global Film Festival has taught me how to connect with unique local and national audience and manage multiple time-sensitive projects all while leading a diverse team of talented interns.

Curate - Connect - Cuba

In March of 2016 I had the opportunity to travel to the island of Cuba with William & Mary's New Media Workshop. While there, I filmed and produced a short documentary film on student's engagement with Cuba's rich film culture.

William & Mary Campus Recreation

Marketing Assistant

What better place to work than where you also work out? As a member of the Campus Recreation Marketing Team I get to dedicate myself to improving the health and well-being of my fellow students by promoting departmental wellness initiatives, organizing campus-wide health events, and encouraging student engagement with our facility, staff, and programs.

Favorite Things

Video Games

Whoever said that girls don't play video games clearly never met me. Not only do I love gaming's ability to tell stories and build communities, but I enjoy researching the role that the industry plays in today's new media landscape.

To me, Batman is more than a crime-fighting vigilante with a husky voice and far too many fancy gadgets. The Caped Crusader transcends the many mediums of entertainment to find his way deeply ingrained into the subculture of American icons.

Samsung Gear VR

I'm a firm believer in bridging the gap between media producers and consumers and I believe that the Samsung Gear VR is a step in the right direction. By integrating familiar smartphone technology with a user-friendly interface, this device revolutionizes storytelling and puts the power to create in your hands.
