Drop in Centre Volunteer

The centre offers respite for young people and adults with varying disabilities. I helped to organise activities such as sports challenges, domino tournaments, card games which were all appropriate to service users needs and abilities. I also supported many service users during the period of the centre. I have built a lot of relationships with both staff and service users and I still attend when I can.

Student Work Placement

As I am a student social worker I undertook a 2 week observational placement. The first week I was assigned to work with a project called CHOSI this entailed working with children aged 8-12 yrs who were displaying challenging behaviour, referrals were made by schools or the police and brought to attention by the social work team. I was given the opportunity to study cases and was shown in great detail how information was collated and recorded in order to monitor the service users progress and welfare. I assisted project workers in home visits and family activities such as bowling and swimming lessons. I also had the opportunity to observe grief counselling which was very challenging but insightful. I also had the opportunity of working with disabled young people aged 0-18yrs, this service offered support to children whom have complex needs.I feel this opportunity gave me a wealth of experience and insight which built on my current knowledge and desire to help empower and support service users.

Home fundraising

Door to door fundraiser

I worked with a team of individuals aiming to raise funds for many charities, such as Red Cross, BHF, SAve the Children, MacMIllan etc. I enjoyed the job as I believe that raising money for charity is important, also I enjoyed the challenge of speaking to loads of people on their door step.

British Red Cross

Voluntary Befriender Red Cross

I attended a 4 week training course provided by the Red Cross this enabled me to both attribute knowledge and skill sets in providing comprehensive support to service users while giving me practical training such as mobility and meal time assistance. I worked with adult service users alongside OTs and physiotherapists to aid service users to carry out every day tasks such as cooking, cleaning, shopping. This experience will stay with me forever as it allowed me to discover that I wanted a career in the care sector, in order to support and empower the vulnerable in society.
