Outlined and conducted a study that compared the efficacy of bacterial swabs between various
competitor brands.
⋅ Processed over 144 samples by triplicate plating within a month.
⋅ Produced bacterial glycerol stocks, with titer verification, to help maintain over 12786 organisms in the culture collection.
⋅ Helped update and complete inventory of organisms into new database
⋅ Extracted bacterial DNA using the MagNA Pure LC 2.0 instrument and analyzed purified DNA by PicoGreen®, Nano Drop®, and the Agilent 2800 Tape Station for protocol optimization.

Principal Investigator: Jennifer Whistler

Studied how the GPCR, delta opiate receptor, affects behavior by using a variety of molecular and pharmacological methods with in vitro and in vivo models.
⋅ Created a library of mutant delta opiate receptors by site-directed mutagenesis, and determined their effects on cell signaling by evaluating calcium release and receptor internalization.
⋅ Conducted behavioral tests to study the risks and effects of energy drinks, alcohol consumption, controlled substances, addiction, pain and anxiety between wild type and transgenic mouse models.

PUBLICATION: DeFriel, J. N., Lu, J. Y., Whistler, J. L., & van Rijn, R. M. (2013). Adolescent intake of caffeinated energy drinks does not affect adult alcohol consumption in mice. (Submitted).
