Substitute Teacher

During my college vacations, I come home to work as a substitute teacher at my old elementary school. I have worked in various grades (K-8) as well as in specialty classrooms, such as art or music teachers. Seeing as I have experience working with children who need extra support, the school tends to place me in Kaleidoscope (a section of the school that specializes in working with students who are on the spectrum or have behavioral issues. I was a longterm sub in Kaleidoscope, working with children on the spectrum, for approximately a month when I returned home after my first year of college.

Camp Rainbow

Every summer, for the past 5 years, I volunteer at a summer camp for children who are on the autism spectrum. As a camp counselor, I work one-on-one with a camper, building a friendship while offering support and encouraging the campers to be the very best that they can be. The camp focuses mostly maintaining and improving social skills as well as building a close-knit community and support system. We keep a structured setting that enforces hard work, focus and routine, while covering this all with fun and play. The morning focuses on stations including, sensory, team building, fine- and gross-motor activities. In the afternoon, we really work to build close connections with our campers, while working on valuable life skills like sharing, teamwork and even help some campers practice swimming. Camp Rainbow has been a life changing experience that has inspired me to continue to work with children on the spectrum for the rest of my life, and is a program hope to be involved with for many years to come.

Summer Tutor

I am a summer tutor in a classroom for children who are the autism spectrum. I work with these children for 4-5 weeks in the summer to keep the students on track and prevent them from losing any of what they have learned throughout the previous school year. This summer school program also serves to help the students maintain their social skills and readjust to the routine of the school day.
