My co-founder, Jennifer Fliess, and I started Rent the Runway in 2009 as an online service that gives millions of women access to designer dress and accessory rentals. With over 5 million members, 350 employees and 300 designer brands, Rent the Runway is the largest rental platform in the world, democratizing luxury for women everywhere in the sharing economy. I envision a world where every woman in this country -- and eventually every woman in the world -- has a subscription to fashion.

Jennifer Fleiss and I started Rent The Runway while we were students at Harvard Business School. The idea came to me during a Thanksgiving break from Harvard Business School, while I stayed with my sister in New York. She had just bought an expensive dress for a wedding even though her closet was already filled with options. I realized that social media had made re-wearing dresses an unappealing idea, and there might be a way to save women from buying new dresses and crowding their closets, again and again.
