About Me

Janet Mock

I am the New York Times bestselling author of "Redefining Realness," host of MSNBC's "So POPular," and founder of #girlslikeus. I cover culture with an emphasis on gender, race and representation. I will wear my feminism proudly as a crop top-wearing, curly hair-teasing, pop culture-obsessed, sex worker-embracing, LGBTQ-championing black feminist woman writer.

Career

Redefining Realness

By Janet Mock

In "Redefining Realness" I relay my experiences of growing up young, multiracial, poor, and trans in America. I offer readers accessible language while imparting vital insight about the unique challenges and vulnerabilities of a marginalized and misunderstood population. My path to womanhood, identity, love & so much more is a coming-of-age story celebrating the perils and pleasures of my unconventional girlhood in Honolulu, Dallas and Oakland. It’s the first memoir from a young trans woman and debuted on the New York Times bestsellers list!

MSNBC

So POPular!

I host the weekly talk show "So POPular" on Shift by MSNBC every Friday at 11am. The show explores popular culture from a progressive and millennial lens. It's basically a space where we go deep on the things people pretend they're too smart to like. I consider myself a Beyoncé scholar and have an encyclopedic knowledge of popular culture.

Career

#redefiningrealness

Redefining Realness was my chance to tell my own story and to tell the story I didn't have growing up.

I flip the script on Fusion reporter Alicia Menendez

The on-air feud between former CNN host Piers Morgan and I made many in media reconsider their perceptions and approaches to stories about and relating to the trans community. In this interview I flip the script on Fusion's Alicia Menendez and have her explain her life as a cisgender woman.

OWN: Steep Your Soul

I speak with Oprah for the OWN "Steep Your Soul" series.

So POPular Special: My Interview with Laverne Cox

In a very special edition of So POPular!, I sat down with Laverne Cox, where we discussed everything from her career in Hollywood, her visibility as a trans actress and advocate, the issues facing the trans community, and of course season three of her hit Netflix series, Orange is The New Black.

#GirlsLikeUs Campaign

I started #GirlsLikeUs to create space where trans women can tell their own stories and offer guidance to younger women. It has brought countless trans women into conversation with one another across social media, and has empowered them to tell their own stories apart from the media's stereotyped portrayals.

2012 Sylvia Rivera Activist Award

In 2012 I was honored with the Sylvia Activist Award. Named for Sylvia Rivera, a veteran of the 1969 Stonewall uprising and a persistent voice for the rights of people of color and low-income queer and trans people, SRLP started providing free legal help to trans New Yorkers in 2002.
