Completed in 2011, this final phase of the Willamette River Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Tunnel Program was part of a massive effort by the city of Portland, Oregon to clean up the Willamette River. The 5.5-mile long ESCSO project was one of the first uses of a slurry-mix shield tunnel-boring machine (TBM) in North America, and was the longest single microtunneling drive ever.

- During the summer of 2009, served as engineering intern at the Port Center Shaft. 49-ft in diameter, with a depth of 72 ft, this shaft was located at the end of the 5.5-mile ESCSO tunnel. Used to retrieve the TBM upon completion of the North drive, the shaft was excavated using a clam shell bucket, and slurry wall techniques supported the shaft perimeter. Artificial ground freezing was used to stabilize soil adjacent to the shaft, allowing tie-in of the Port Center shaft to Portland’s live sewer system.
