Director General DAPS Global
DAPS (Doctors Advancing Patient Safety) was an organisation that I setup at the beginning of 2009 to facilitate junior doctor engagement in Patient Safety with a remit of carrying out Quality Improvement Projects in hospitals to improve the care of their patients. DAPS is co-run by Dr Sarah Hammond who works as a Consultant Anaesthetist at St George's.
We have carried out many activities under the auspices of DAPS. As well as the Quality Improvement Projects (QIPs) which we carry out at St Peters Hospital and St George's Hospital, we also run a successful Student Forum at St George's Hospital, offering students SSCs (Special Study Components in Patient Safety).
DAPS produces its own publication called 'Reporting for Duty' which seeks to highlight the errors made by junior doctors and converts it into a learning resource.
DAPS also took seven junior doctors to Lahore, Pakistan on the DAPS Safety Tour which facilitated a partnership between British and Pakistani junior doctors to carry out QIPs.
DAPS also ran an extremely successful conference in November 2011 jointly with the Royal Society of Medicine with Sir Liam Donaldson opening the conference as the keynote speaker and many useful workshops and presentations throughout the day.
Our vision is to ensure that Patient Safety as well as Quality Improvement become top of the clinical agenda and our activities are focussed to achieving that goal.
