My core role involves organising the logistics of and participating in field trips to remote locations of the Great Barrier Reef. I also contribute to the publication of scientific papers through the compilation of coral bleaching data from a synthesis of literature, and the graphical and statistical analyses and preparation of figures and draft text. My research has been communicated in the form of scientific papers and international conference presentations. My position also involves demonstrating and tutoring for a Master's level subject, and the general maintenance of coral aquaria and laboratory equipment.
As the coral specialist, I conducted survey dives across the northern GBR, the Solomon Islands and Palau to assess the health and diversity of remote coral reefs on three month-long missions. We coordinated with local communities and municipalities to conduct research within their territories, share knowledge and create future networks. I also contributed science communication blogs and photography to the Living Ocean's social media, and continue to work with LOF as a data analysis consultant.
I coordinated a multi-faceted project monitoring the health and diversity of Seychelles' coastal reefs and artisanal fish stocks for two years. I trained a team of staff and international and local volunteers in marine species identification and survey techniques; including fish, coral and benthic invertebrates. My role involved both the hands-on component of driving boats, SCUBA diving and training, and also the synthesis of literature into technical reports for local NGO partners and Seychelles' National Parks Authority.
I created and presented a series of informative talks on various marine biology and conservation issues at the Four Seasons Resort to promote appreciation and understanding of Seychelles marine resources. I lead guests on guided snorkel tours and designed conservation-based activities for guests' children.
