Voluntary Dance Teacher Assistant

I am currently a voluntary dance teaching assistant for children aged between five to eight years of age. The class takes place in the dance school I have attended since the age of three and I love working with the children two hours a week, helping them to develop their technical ability in ballet and tap.

Off Your Cake

Bakery Assistant

During the summer holidays I worked alongside my mum in her busy bakery where I undertook a range of different tasks. From each task or role that I was given, I developed a variety of skills. My duties were:
🔹to help bake and decorate cupcakes which were to be sold to customers throughout the day. This allowed me to develop my understanding of how to use different equipment properly and safely and I also found it to be a therapeutic task which I enjoyed.
🔹to ensure that the workspace was clean and tidy before and after baking and decorating cakes, along with washing, drying and putting away equipment which was no longer required. This helped me to gain an excellent understanding of hygiene and health and safety as it is important, especially within an environment in which food is being handled, that surfaces and equipment are cleaned thoroughly to prevent contamination.
🔹to observe, follow instructions and practice cake decorating. This provided me with excellent listening and creativity skills as I was given a goal to work towards. I was able to put my mind and heart to the task and I was thrilled with my finishing results.
🔹to answer the bakery phone and speak to customers regarding any queries or concerns they may have had. At first, I was out of my comfort zone as I wasn't used to speaking to customers over the phone, however my confidence grew as I answered the phone in a friendly manner and spoke to customers with a positive attitude. This also developed my communication skills.
🔹to sell cupcakes and slices of cake to walk-in customers. This allowed me to develop my communication skills with customers face to face. I spoke to customers with a positive approach as it is vital that customers feel comfortable in the environment. I also developed my confidence and skills in handling money as I had to handle customer's money and also sort out any change which needed to be given back.

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working in the bakery as it provided me with a variety of different skills which I can use every day. The bakery is constantly busy with orders of celebration cakes which meant that most of the time, I was working under a lot of pressure in a fast paced environment. However, I found this beneficial as it allowed me to concentrate on each task that I was undertaking. I enjoyed having a number of duties and roles in the bakery because it meant that I had different things to do throughout the day.
