Your Teen Media

Summer intern and student blogger

I began working with Your Teen, a parenting magazine for parents of teenagers based in Cleveland, OH, during my senior year of high school. After spending my senior project working closely with the editor and manager, I spent my summer as an intern with the company. As such, I helped to write and edit articles, proofread issues, attend meetings, and secure content. When I started college, I wrote a regular blog for the magazine's website about my experience as an American student attending college abroad.

The North Star Collaborative

Student Advisor and Teaching Assistant

The North Star Collaborative is a nonprofit summer academy run at Laurel School in Shaker Heights, OH for girls at the Warner Girls Leadership Academy and other Cleveland schools. Since 2009, the program has worked with the same group of underprivileged girls, providing educational support throughout the year and during the summers with the end goal of seeing each girl receive her college diploma. For four summers, I worked in different positions with the Collaborative, including running a newsletter class and teaching a humanities course on the Civil Rights Movement.

Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center

Summer intern

While in high school, I was a member of Teach2Serve, a national nonprofit that worked to teach students about the business of NGOs. Membership required that we intern at a nonprofit organization, which led me to the VA hospital in Cleveland. I worked with a RN in the colorectal surgery department; alongside him, I learned much about the day-to-day workings of the hospital as well as the larger medical, financial, and logistical issues of government healthcare.
