I entered graduate school at Virginia Tech in the Fall of 2010 following the completion of my bachelors degree. As a result of my undergraduate studies, I knew that I wanted to help others and enjoyed listening, learning, and creating empathic relationships. My coursework focused on research, therapeutic models and theories, diagnosis, domestic violence, human sexuality, multicultural issues, and family and couple relationships. My favorite course was Internal Family Systems; a therapeutic model that views individuals as having many parts with valuable qualities that form who you are and how you interact with others. This framework has helped me to view my own flaws, and others', in a positive way, as each part of a person is striving to protect that person's core. Through my education I developed acceptance, compassion, curiosity, and confidence. After completing my internship at Alternative House, I realized that while I enjoyed doing therapy, I was not interested in continuing to pursue a career with that level of emotional exhaustion. I am continuing my effort to help others in a professional office setting.
