Wu Family Director of Education

Oversees and coordinates all aspects of the education and educational outreach programs for the Detroit Symphony, including a $500K budget and leads a team of 11 employees plus 9 Conductors and 30 Teaching Artists in day-to-day operations to deliver high quality educational programs for Metro Detroit youth.

• Collaborates with area educators, Conductors, and Artistic Operations staff in the development of concert themes, repertoire and programs for educational activities to support new visioning for the launch of the Wu Family Academy of Learning and Engagement.
• Cultivated a donor to establish an endowment of $5M, securing the longevity of the DSO’s educational initiatives.
• Serves as staff liaison to the Education Steering Committee of the Board of Directors, engaging over 20 volunteer leaders, facilitating real time engagement between the Board and youth participant.
• Led and managed production of the inaugural season of Live From Orchestra Hall: Classroom Edition educational webcast, including collaborating with the Detroit Public Schools engaging every K-6 grade classroom in the event resulting in 450+ schools from six states and 100,000 students participating in the performance.

General Manager of Civic Youth Ensembles

Ensures the scheduling and production of 26 ensembles in the DSO’s music education program, including concerts, rehearsals, tours and special events ran smoothly, effectively, and in a financially responsible manner. Leads a team of nine, plus nine Conductors and 30 Teaching Artists in day-to-day operations to deliver high-quality training programs to participating students. Works with team on performance goals, benchmarks and also evaluates Conductors performance.

• Spearheaded implementation of new assessment and music curriculum for DSO’s Civic Youth Ensembles which enhanced the educational and artistic quality of the ensembles.
• Successfully planned and executed 35+ internal and external performances and large events by Civic Youth Ensembles each season.
• Creates and produces marketing materials including social media strategic planning, flyers, brochures and mass mailings.
• Planned and executed the Civic Celebration performance which successfully raised over $1M in support of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Education programs.
• Works with artistic leadership and senior management on development of concert programs, and cultivated relationships with staff, DSO musicians, DSO board members, organizational partners, volunteers, funders, and students to promote the growth, relevance and viability of Civic Youth Ensemble programs.
