Meredith

Academic Project: Spoon Magazine

In a program sponsored by Meredith Corporation, we developed a prototype launch publication that fits into an assigned Meredith business plan. Our project, Spoon Magazine, was a hybrid between Meredith's foodie social networking site MixingBowl.com and a quarterly print publication. Our demographic: young, affluent college graduates, both male and female. The group is responsible for all aspects of production including developing an editorial/sales plan and utilizing new technologies in a marketing capacity. We focused on the unique marketing possibilities for this age group and using Facebook, Twitter, live events and bundling with existing publications, we created a entry point for the youth market to enter the Meredith brand family.

Cosmopolitan Magazine, Hearst Corporation

Editorial Intern

As an editorial intern, my duties consisted mostly of research and synthesizing information for the use of editors above me. I was focused mainly on the relationship advice section of the magazine and interviewed many psychologists and sociologists for articles that either my editors or I wrote. I also worked in other aspects of production, analyzing data from reader surveys and conducting my own research and interviews for various pieces throughout the magazine.

East Side Newspapers, Inc

Publishing Intern

As a publishing intern for a company that prints four magazines and several websites, I was responsible for both editorial and publishing tasks. Most notably, I worked with developing a new publication and did research into the intended audience for the purposes of ad sales. I reached out to new potential buyers and helped build a base for distribution for the new title. I also helped develop the online content and build new regular features for the magazine for the student demographic.

Though a class, I was a staff reporter for a daily newspaper in a mid-size city. I worked for the Muse (arts and entertainment) section, though I wrote in other sections as well. Major projects included a biographical piece about MU Alum Arthur Unger, a profile of artistic feminist group Two Girls Working, and a personal feature of patients at the Ellis Fischel Palliative Care Clinic.
