I'm eternally hungry for fashion--yes, I'll lust over your Louboutins, but I'm likely to gab about the history of the stiletto and diverge into post-feminist theory. My writing is for the masses, but I assume my readers like smart, funny writing that tickles their brain whether its 300 words or 30,000. I've worked on an inte...

* S/S 2013 TREND FORECAST WRITE-UP: "The future is the past: Mars looks like Petra, metallics and hyper-pigment-techno-colors resemble jellyfish, postmodernism mashes up culture like ancient textiles. Darkness is inherent in the light of summer; death in the birth of spring. Think shipwreck more than nautical cliché. Simple geometric shapes make incomprehensible architecture. I predict a return of ramie and an renewed interest in deconstructed knits. Eyes will still be toward the East, the epitome of past and future."

Parsons The New School for Design

Teaching Assistant for "History of Fashion" course

I utilize a variety of disparate disciplines to educate a classroom of twenty-five undergraduate students in the History of Fashion, in tandem with the Professor's lecture class. Drawing on my experience in acting, public relations, and fashion, I craft a pedagogy that combines engaging and entertaining discourse, "sticky ideas" (think Dan & Chip Heath), and information about historic fashions coupled with pertinent, contemporary examples. I challenge students to think beyond "boring" ideas that dilute complexity, by using a post-structuralist framework. As a fashion journalist, I convey the potency of language and the power of the written word to the students. The design students in the course are already beginning to use language as a means of expression akin to how they use fabric. The result has been a marked improvement in their writing and an exciting use of vocabulary. Finally, using Edward Said's notion of "humanistic" discourse, I draw on the imagination and empathy of the students to fully comprehend the history of the 20th century. By rooting fashion history deeply in the context of general history, exciting correlations become unearthed, which have yet to be properly explored.

Parsons New School for Design

Master of Arts Student of Fashion Studies

I utilize various disciplines (including fashion history and theory, art and design studies, history, museology, anthropology, sociology, ethnology, cultural studies, film and visual studies) to essentially explore why people wear what they wear. From "swaddling cloth to mourning shroud," garments and fashion surround humanity from birth to death to varying degrees. I am interested in continuing to bring validity to this field of study through both research in the academic sphere and journalistic writing.
