David Butler

Director of Software Engineering

Pasadena, CA

I enable quality software by focusing on teamwork and technical excellence. I am fueled by coffee, good food, and a love for the craft of building great software. And I still code daily!

Software is like cooking

"Programming without refactoring is like cooking without cleaning. It gets the job done but leaves behind a mess."

What drives me? Software! Elegant solutions. Integrating diverse sources of data. Understanding people and helping them fulfill their passions. The fascinating diversity of other languages, foods, cultures, and ideas. The inner workings of the body (biology) and the mind (psychology). Coffee, and lately, donuts.

Director of Software Engineering

I was inspired to join Levo by its mission: to elevate millennials in their career. I like to have my work mean something and help people.

At Levo I've found a balance between my passions: day-to-day coding, architecture & design, improving processes, and mentoring my colleagues.

Thinking Talents

Logical thinking and a love of ideas are real assets when building great software. Even more importantly, my relational talents help teams work together to accomplish amazing things.

What are your thinking talents?

I'm the proud father of sweet, passionate, curious little Jonathan. He challenges my creativity and resourcefulness every day.

"In anything at all, perfection is finally attained not when there is no longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away." - Antoine de St.-Exupery in Wind, Sand and Stars

Spokeo, Inc.

Software Architect & Manager

At Spokeo I was a manager and architect for products that help bring people together, including: famous person profiles extracted from open data sources, making 600 million+ historical records searchable, and a collaborative family tree.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Software Engineer

How cool is it to help explore the galaxy? At JPL I designed, built, and maintained the next generation of software tools to improve how they build spacecraft. I learned how to create application frameworks, lead teams, and collaborate effectively.

Ciao Italia!

In 2004 I had the amazing good luck to land an internship in Rome, Italy to help work on software used to build CERN. During my stay, I fell in love with good food, good coffee, the Italian language, and traveling.

BS, Physics

At UCLA I was able to fuel my passions for logical thinking and ideas by exploring physics, philosophy, and computer science. This shaped the way I approach learning and problem-solving, and gave me a great foundation in rigorous, mathematical thinking.
