Backup Supervision & Crisis Intervention Advocate

Passionate crisis intervention advocate providing empowering support for survivors accessing the 24/7 hotline; responsible for providing backup supervision and support to volunteer hotline advocates actively supporting survivors (on-call); and co-facilitate training sessions, including small groups for incoming volunteer cohorts.

Additionally, serve as an advocate at DC area hospitals, police stations, and court proceedings for survivors; provide community support to legislative/policy activist.

Completed eight (8) week/sixty (60)-hour extensive training on rape crisis counseling and crisis intervention, hotline advocacy, and hospital advocacy skills; and as required complete additional training in all areas of support.

Advocates for Youth

Urban Retreat Intern

Under the supervision of the Youth Activist Network Manager, I assist in planning the Urban Retreat, Advocate’s annual four-day youth activist training in Washington DC.

Each year, 125 youth activists from across the country and internationally are selected to attend Advocates’ Urban Retreat, where they receive in-depth training on reproductive and sexual health, media outreach, grassroots organizing, and new media activism. In addition to training, during the retreat youth activists visit their Members of Congress and advocate for better sexual and reproductive health policies

In preparation for the event, I play an integral role in coordinating event logistics, working with participants to ensure completion of registration forms and preparing event materials.

Internship Responsibilities included:
Overseeing registration for 125 training participants
Preparing materials for conference participants
Communicating with the Urban Retreat Youth Advisory Board
Creating the Urban Retreat Yearbook, certificates, and name tags
Coordinating activities with program staff
Participating in additional activities as needed

WIN - Women's Information Network

Practice Your Politics Co-Chair

WIN is a D.C. professional, political, and social network dedicated to empowering young, pro-choice, Democratic women. As co-chair of the Practice Your Politics Network, I assist through volunteer events planning that will aid in WIN members’ desire to have an immediate impact on causes that will strengthen relationships with local organizations and allowing members to connect local-area direct service work with larger political change.

Past events have included:
Hearts, Choice and Clinic Escorts: a volunteer effort for crafting handmade valentine's and love notes for some of the hardest working volunteers in the choice movement--Clinic Escorts and health clinic staff;
DC Serve-a-thon: organization (as well as participation) of a team of WIN members committed to volunteering with one of the largest volunteer projects in DC in the clean up of the Egypt Ophelia Center (an entity of Planned Parenthood);
Community Service Fair: a team member in the organization of a community service fair and fundraiser that allowed WIN members to get involved with local nonprofits around DC and network with other volunteers;
Book it to WIN it: The Reading WINbow: books drive raising books/funds for Tyler Elementary School (DC).

As a paralegal at HGN, District of Columbia office I worked in the Environmental Litigation and Regulatory Actions practice area. It was necessary for me to be skilled in every aspect of case management including legal research, coordinating document reviews, and the review and analysis of documents contained in litigation document management databases. I assisted attorneys in all aspects of trial preparation and I am knowledgeable regarding litigation procedures and federal and state court rules.

As the only paralegal in this office I was responsible for case management and organization of case files and calendaring [for 5 attorneys]; Preparation of legal documents, including briefs, pleadings, affidavits, Rule 30(b)(6) deposition notices and other discovery documents; I handled document reviews using concordance document database; Maintained familiarity with Federal Rules of Court and I was responsible for filing documents with the Court Clerk via ECF or hard copy in appellate cases; I also enhanced my proficiency in research and analysis through research and analysis of statutes, court decisions, and legal articles using Westlaw.

As the firm underwent a name change and firm branding I handled all planning for marketing events and conferences, including: creation of press releases, poster boards and brochures designs, exhibition booth planning and maintaining spreadsheets of contacts for sending out marketing materials and event invitations.

Beyond the duties mentioned above I also served as the office administrator which included the creation of an office procedural manual, handling new employee training, summer interns, incoming invoices, conference room set up, IT support, ordering office supplies, maintaining state bar membership status, preparation and filing for new state bar admissions and CLE requirements, office personnel files, answering multiline telephone system and maintenance of all other administrative duties within the DC office.
