NC DHHS Division of Services for the Blind

Rehabilitation Casework Assistant

For the first three years in this position I worked with the Medical Eye Care Program (providing surgeries, eye exams and prescription glasses for low income individuals). I interviewed and took applications, verified household income (including wages, Social Security, SSI, Work First, food stamps and In-Kind support) and checked Medicaid and Medicare status. Following often changing guidelines, I determined if consumers were eligible, notified them of the determination and produced medical authorizations where appropriate. With the withdrawal of funding for this program, I have assisted the Vocational Rehabilitation program by taking applications in the office or in the field (covering many counties in WNC), assisting consumers in applying for services through other agencies or programs, corresponding and following up with consumers, vendors and medical offices, verifying billing and payments, requesting medical records as well as the usual administrative tasks of faxing/copying/filing and processing data. In this position I use ESS, OLV (DHHS WIRM) and the BEAM case management system.
