August 2008 — Present
As a psychiatric aide, I mainly assist nurses in patient care. This includes helping patients in following their personal programs, ensure they are behaving appropriately, and to develop their life skills
I further developed the following skills sets:
Working with a group of nurses and other psychiatric aides has helped me focus on achieving team-orientated goals, which includes getting these patients healthy and easing their transition into the community.
Dealing with patients who are mentally ill requires me to exercise my communication skills. Since the same style of communication is not universal for all patients, I have to tailor my messages to make sure the patients follow their daily programs.
When interacting with difficult patients, I've had to increase my emotional intelligence. Since many of these patients have mood swings, I have to be able to empathize, listen effectively and be patient with them to ensure their needs are being met.
