Our lab primarily focuses on the evolution of gene regulatory networks involved in peripheral nervous system development, using the model organism Ciona intestinalis. In order to further investigate these gene regulatory networks, I have developed a transcriptome and genome for two additional ascidian species found in San Diego. Additionally, I have adapted transgenic technologies to these species and demonstrated that perturbation of these networks is possible. Utilizing the transcriptome, I cloned and characterized the expression patterns of multiple PNS genes. Techniques used include Transcriptome Assembly, Genome Assembly, PCR, Cloning, Electroporation, Fertilization techniques, Microscopy, and some Bioinformatics.
