The KidSafe Project Society
GEMS Program Coordinator
September 2013 — Present
In keeping with our mandate to ensure that at-risk children have a safe place to go when school is not in session, GEMS (Girls Exploring Motion and Self) provides a safe place for girls to spend time together once a week to check in with trustworthy, female role models and to feel comfortable trying new things in an inclusive, non judgmental environment. Self esteem, leadership, and media literacy are also explored with the overall focus on increasing the mental and physical well-being of the girls.
As the GEMS Program Coordinator, I develop fun, empowering and educational programming on a weekly basis. I facilitate a horizontally-structured group that encourages discussion and gives each girl a platform to exercise her voice and step outside her comfort zone. I manage my own budget and am also responsible for volunteer management and connecting with external community groups.
I represented GEMS at the inaugural National Skills Institute on Girls Programming with the Canadian Women's Foundation from April 23 – 25, 2014.
