Skillcrush

CEO & Founder

Skillcrush is an online education company that I founded in 2012. Our focus is digital skill building and we have helped thousands of students make a career change into the tech fields.

Building Skillcrush has been the hardest, most-fun, most-satisfying thing I have ever done and I have loved every second of it (even the hard parts).

One of my most favorite parts about running this company is that I get to design the company I always wanted to work for. That means that we are 100% remote and we all set our own, flexible work hours.

Digital divide: What if more women learned to code?

A wonderful reporter from the BBC followed me around for a day. Check out my big hair!

Balance Media

Co-founder

This was the first company I founded! I founded it with my good friend Kate, although I didn't realize we were starting a bonafide COMPANY when we first began working together. We designed and developed websites for all kinds of amazing media companies including WNYC, Pro Publica, The Huffington Post, and The New York Times. I learned so much about running a business, hiring and managing employees, and more. I could NEVER have started Skillcrush without this experience. And just LOOK at the view from our office!

MTV & VH1

Associate Producer

I worked for almost a year as the first technical producer hired to work as an intermediary between the MTV and VH1 dot com teams and the Integrated Marketing teams. This experience actually inspired me to start Skillcrush because I saw, first hand, all the upheaval and chaos inside of companies that were making the transition from analog to digital.

Flavorpill

Photo Editor

This was my first FULL TIME office job out of college and I LOVED it. Flavorpill was an amazing place to work because it was hip and cool and gave it's employees an amazing amount of space to roam around and learn. This was where I first began to learn about product management and software design and where I wrote my first ever lines of code. I will be forever grateful!

Yale University

Bachelor of Arts, African-American Studies, Studio Art - Photography

People always ask me if I was a Computer Science major in college and the answer is...emphatically NO! Instead, I studied African American art and developed my own photography studio practice.

When not studying, I focused on my all-girl sketch comedy group and my prank society. College is all about fun, right?!?!

Education

Dos Pueblos Senior High

High School Diploma, Everything

Looking back I had a wonderful, quintessential, big California public high school experience. I played water polo, was on student government, and made the world's best friends a girl to ask for.

That picture is my high school friends helping me put on my wedding dress :)

Is code the most important language in the world?

A somewhat misleading title because code isn't just ONE language...but I am splitting hairs ;)
