If you’re looking to score a pay raise next time, take some tips from Amy Schumer. The comedian landed an $8 million book deal by haggling up from the initial offer of $1 million.

According to The New York Times, in 2013 Schumer signed a $1 million book deal with HarperCollins for publishing a series of humorous essays. Just one year later she backed out of the contract; although some may view this as financial suicide, she saw it as an investment in herself. Knowing her worth, Schumer walked away from the easy money because 1 million wasn’t going to cut it.

The now Emmy-winning actress has found immense success due to her hilarious jokes, love of white wine, and easygoing attitude. Not to mention, her #DropsMic moment on gun control gained her even more fans—and upped her value substantially.

Schumer’s $8-million deal with Simon & Schuster’s Gallery Books now surpasses both Tina Fey’s “Bossypants” and Lena Dunham’s “Not That Kind of Girl” deals, which were previously reported at $5 and $3.5-million respectively.

She explained her decision to ​GQ earlier this summer, saying “I had a whole deal, but I decided to wait.” By doing so, Schumer proved that patience is a virtue and good things come to those who are Amy Schumer. She continued on in the explanation, adding “I thought I would make more money if I waited.

The main point to take away from this is that you should always know your worth. When you have progressed in your career and gained more skills and experience, make sure your bosses are aware of it.
