Deciding to do charity work is easy, but figuring out which organization to support can be more difficult. With so many options available, it’s important to choose a reputable charity that aligns with your personal values. By doing this, you’ll ensure that your time and efforts make the greatest impact possible.

According to business philanthropy expert Theresa Roemer, use the following tips to find a charity that’s the best fit for you:

1. Be willing to ask yourself tough questions.

What are the things that touch your heart? Is it your children or pets? Have you or anyone close to you been diagnosed with an illness? Write down a few moments, experiences, and events that have impacted you both positively and negatively. This way you can see where you stand.

2. Make sure to do your research.

After you’ve figured out your interests, look into charities that associate with those passions. Research if they are big or small organizations; national or international what sets them apart and their objectives. Also, discover where the money goes that is donated to the charity. Your research will allow you to see if you want to get involved with that specific organization.

3. How can you help further the cause?

When you start volunteering, it’s important to use your own skills and strengths to benefit the charity organization you’re partnering with. Make a list of your skills and consider what the charity might need help with. For example, if you have experience in accounting, bookkeeping would be a great contribution; or if you have a background in marketing, using your promotions and event expertise could really help them out.

4. Time management.

Becoming involved in philanthropy can be very beneficial, but it does require time. You should decide how much time you are able to commit to this new venture before getting too far into the process. As with anything else, you want to schedule this just as you would a business meeting or new project. These groups rely on the generosity of their members’ free time; therefore, if you cannot commit fully, it is better not to get involved at all.

5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

After finding a few charities you’d like to get involved with, attend some of their local events. Get to know the other members by attending meetings or annual fundraisers and understanding what they hope to achieve through this charity. This will give you a sense of whether or not this is an organization you would like to be part of.”

6. Devote yourself.

If you want to feel the true reward of helping those in need, you’re going to have to fully commit yourself. Get involved as much as possible and make friends along the way. The more invested you are, the more rewarding it will be.

You can always start your own charity with the help of friends. This is a great way to improve other people’s lives and make a difference in your community.
